Kitchen Remodel Planning Checklist: 10 Things to Decide Before You Hire
Ten decisions that make a kitchen remodel smoother, faster and easier to price, from layout to lead times.

The best kitchen remodels are decided on paper long before the first cabinet comes out. Use this checklist to get your plans clear before you ask contractors for estimates. If you are in Westchester, the Bronx, New York City or Fairfield County, our team at J&F Contracting Services is happy to walk through it with you.
1. What is not working today
Write down the real problems: not enough counter space, a dark room, poor storage, a layout that blocks traffic. A clear problem list keeps the design focused.
2. Whether the layout will change
Keeping the sink, stove and refrigerator where they are keeps costs down. Moving plumbing or removing a wall adds work, and sometimes structural or permit requirements.
3. Your budget and your priorities
Decide your comfortable range and what matters most: cabinets, counters, appliances or lighting. A good contractor will help you spend where it counts.
4. Cabinets
Cabinet style, construction and lead time affect both cost and schedule. Order early, because they are often the longest wait in the project.
5. Countertops
Stone, quartz, laminate and solid surface all behave differently. Think about heat, stains, upkeep and seams, and look at full slabs in person when you can.
6. Appliances
Choose appliances before cabinets are finalized, because their dimensions, venting and electrical needs shape the plan.
7. Lighting
Plan ceiling light, task light under cabinets and a few softer options. Lighting is one of the cheapest ways to make a kitchen feel finished.
8. Flooring and backsplash
Pick durable, easy to clean surfaces. Tell your contractor early if the floor continues into other rooms.
9. Your building rules, if you live in a co-op or condo
Many buildings require approval before work, plus insurance paperwork and set work hours. Ask management for the alteration rules first.
10. Where you will cook during the project
Plan a temporary setup with a small appliance or two, a table and access to water. It makes the weeks without a kitchen much easier.
